Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer and Genius Magic Powder Review & Swatches
I recently attended a Charlotte Event for the launch of their new complexion products. The event was themed around Charlotte’s Magic Academy of Skincare and Makeup in a castle as the new products claim to give your skin that magic touch. Previewed at the event was Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder and the Magic Away Liquid Concealer. I was colour matched for both but unfortunately the shades are too dark for me. The lighting in the room wasn’t the greatest so I didn’t realize how off the shades were. However, I wanted to share the swatches with you.
Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder - $58 CAD
It is a light-diffusing loose powder that helps to blur imperfections and boost radiance. It is made with 99% unscented, natural, raw ingredients and free of talc. The Mica component helps to brighten and the silica helps to mattify and reduces shine. The compact is quite sizeable, containing 0.45oz of product. The sifter it comes with is great as the product is easily dispensed and can be locked shut for traveling. The powder reflects the light for a soft focus effect. It isn’t too sparkly for the under-eye area. The texture is lightweight and finely milled. It doesn’t cake up when layered. The powder is available in three shades - 1-Light, 2-Medium and 3-Dark. I received shade #3 which is for dark skin. Shade #2 is for tan to medium skin which would be a better fit for me. The powder works to set my face but not my under-eyes. I prefer lighter powders to brighten up the eye area. It works to smooth out my skin and blur my pores. I read reviews about the bad smell but it doesn’t bother me. I do find the price-point too expensive for a setting powder.
Magic Away Concealer - $38 CAD
Charlotte Tilbury has been working on this for years, she wanted to create the holy grail of concealers. Magic Away “reduces the appearance of dark circles, pigmentation, redness, blemishes, and imperfections while creating the appearance of firmer, lifted skin”. There are 16 available shade options ranging from fair, medium, tan and dark. The bottle only contains 0.13 oz/ 4ml of product. It has a tapered sponge applicator that is meant to hug the under-eye contour. I personally don’t like the sponge, it gets quite dirty and it takes a few clicks to pump the product out and it’s hard to tell how much is being disbursed. A doe foot applicator would have been much better. As I mentioned above, the colour given to me was too dark. I received shade #11 Tan - peach tan for deep skin with neutral undertones. It has orange undertones so it is good for colour correcting. This shade looks like two shades darker than what I usually wear. I have to use lighter concealer on top of it or lighter setting powder to brighten up the area. The consistency is good, not as thick or drying as Tarte’s Shape Tape. It goes on full coverage but when I blend it in with a sponge it disappears. It doesn’t build well with as the product won’t stick. It works better with a brush (I use a Sigma F79 Concealer Blend Kabuki) to stay in place. Fingertips probably would work as well but I haven’t tried it. I did notice a little creasing as well. I’m curious to see how a lighter shade would look and work on me but for now I won’t be using the Magic Away concealer.
