Why I started taking Collagen

Late last year I was introduced to a collagen supplement.  I kept hearing how good it is but didn’t really know why. It became a popular buzz word amongst health gurus. After doing some research, I was curious to try it myself.  I came across a brand Sproos that carries a few types of collagen products.  Before I get into which one of those products I prefer, let me explain what collagen is for those of you that are unsure.

What is Collagen:

Collagen is the protein in are bodies that hold us together and it provides elasticity to the skin. It can be found in our connective tissue - our skin, muscles, bones, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. As we age, the collagen production declines approximately around the mid 20’s.  Taking collagen daily can offset the decline in our bodies.

A collagen supplement can be found typically as hydrolyzed collagen, which helps form new collagen and is easy to digest.  When you hydrolyze collagen, collagen peptides become bioavailable.  The most common types of collagen come from Bovine which is from cows and aids to build muscle and helps the body make its own collagen.  Then there is Marine collagen that derives from fish and is associated with benefits for the joints, skin, organs, digestion and bones.

 Sproos carries both Grass Fed and Marine collagen in powder and bar form.  Both are unflavoured and dissolve easily in hot and cold beverages.  I personally like the Marine collagen that comes from wild-caught North Atlantic fish.  I mix it into my tea daily and it doesn’t have a fishy taste.  There is 10 grams of collagen in a single scoop.  The brand also carries enhanced beverages that target specific concerns – Up Your Skin and Hair, Up Your Joints and Up Your Gut.  Each has a suger free natural flavour – Citrus Green Tea, Turmeric Mango and Apple Ginger.  After sampling all three, they are all delicious mixed in water!

 After supplementing my collagen, I’ve noticed my hair drops less, my nails have hardened and it helps with my joints.  I use to train Muay Thai and yoga religiously for years and that has taken a toll on my body.  I don’t do those types of workouts anymore but I do workout 4-5 times a week.  Collagen reduces the pain in my back and knees.  I notice the difference when I don’t take it for a long period of time.
