The Enchanting Road to Hana: A Journey of Natural Wonders in Maui

Imagine a road trip that takes you through lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, dramatic coastline, and charming little towns. Welcome to the iconic Road to Hana in Maui, Hawaii. This winding highway stretches for approximately 64 miles, connecting the town of Paia to the remote village of Hana. The journey is an adventure in itself, offering a plethora of natural wonders, cultural sites, and unforgettable experiences. Keep your camera handy as you pass by panoramic viewpoints, rugged cliffs, and pristine beaches. It's a road trip you'll never forget.

The Road to Hana begins in the town of Paia.  I highly recommend stopping at the town before getting on the Hana Highway especially if you’ve been driving awhile and need a break.  The Aloha Surf Hostel is just five minutes away from the highway.  There you’ll see a bunch of colourful surfboards lined up to take a classic Maui picture.

Hoopika Lookout and Beach: are another stop worth checking out if you want a chance to see some marine life in Hawaii.  We seen a couple sleeping sea lions.  If you walk down from the lookout to the beach, there are numerous turtles chilling on the sand.

The Drive of a Lifetime: Buckle up and prepare for an unforgettable drive as you navigate through over 600 hairpin turns and numerous one-lane bridges. The road hugs the coastline, revealing breathtaking ocean vistas at every turn. The journey may be slow-paced, but the scenery is simply awe-inspiring. Many parts of the highway have posted speed limits of 15 miles per hour. You can expect some traffic on the slow-going winding roads.  The road can be quite narrow, keeping your speed lower too. It rains everyday there but, it usually doesn't last long and it's a warm rain. You'll want to bring a towel or 2 and be prepared to put the top up on the car. There's a reason why the Road to Hana is so incredibly lush.

Cascading Waterfalls: One of the highlights of the Road to Hana is the abundance of stunning waterfalls that dot the landscape. From the famous Twin Falls to the majestic Wailua Falls, each cascade offers a mesmerizing sight and a refreshing dip in their natural pools. Take your time to explore, hike, and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of these enchanting waterfalls.

Wondrous Rainforests: Prepare to be transported into a world of emerald green as you venture into the lush rainforests along the Road to Hana. The Hana Highway is renowned for its vibrant tropical foliage, bamboo forests, and serene hiking trails. You can see the bamboo tress as you’re driving by.  They will be on the left side of the highway on the way to Hana. Don't miss the opportunity to hike through the Wai'anapanapa State Park, where you'll find a black sand beach, sea caves, and picturesque coastal cliffs.  You will need to make a timed reservation prior to your visit otherwise you will have to turn around. It was overcast and raining when we arrived at Wai'anapanapa State Park but that didn’t stop us from taking dip.

Stop by the Garden of Eden Arboretum, where you can witness a collection of exotic plants and learn about the island's flora and fauna. Engage with the locals, discover their stories, and gain a deeper understanding of Maui's cultural tapestry.

Halfway to Hana. They have some great food options like shaved ice and fresh baked banana bread.
